can i still do newborn photos after 2 weeks?

Expectant parents, I am here to help you break a few rules when it comes to "newborn photos". Before I begin, here's a little bit about me: As your Seattle in-home newborn photographer, I travel to your home to take lifestyle photos of your and your family. These sessions are relaxed and allow you to hold your baby throughout the session, if that's what you want to do. Like all my family photo sessions, there is no pressure to be anything other that yourself.

With that out of the way, here's what I have to say about newborn photos - you can take them ANYTIME you want after you have your baby. The two-week guideline is mainly for posed newborn photos that require a baby to be more cooperative.

This is especially positive news for families with baby's who have medical needs, NICU babies, adoptive or foster parents, who sometimes bring their babies home past the (very) newborn phase. Anytime before the first year- before they start walking - is a great time. I've taken photos of so many newborn babies and there is something unique about every stage. It's up to you to decide, which of them you want to remember when you take professional newborn photos.

This is when the baby is primarily asleep throughout and still has the curly look as they did when they were in the womb. Their little fingers are toes are so tiny and a phone camera might not be able to capture these details as well as a professional would. This earliest phase also goes by in the blink of an eye. Assuming you are going to be in the thick of sleep-deprivation, I suggest booking your in-home newborn session while you're still pregnant. If you'd like give yourself a few days to figure out you and your baby's feeding routine before scheduling a date for the photoshoot.

Past the 2-week mark, most newborns are more alert and awake to light and some sounds. They tend to have a more awake times as compared to a fresh 48 or 1-2 week-old newborn. Their eyes are open and they move their hands and legs more freely. They start to look a little more like tiny little people and even start to develop a personality. Siblings are more likely to feel comfortable with the new addition by this point, as well.

in-home newborn photos at 1-3 months

Parents feel like they missed the newborn phase if they book their newborn photos past the 1 month mark but I promise it's just as important of a time. Your baby will be smiling and noticing a lot more once they are in the 2+ month territory. They will likely want to be held by you in a photographer's presence, if they are awake but that's okay because my sessions are led by what your baby needs.

newborn photos at 6 months old

As your newborn baby starts to grow and change, you will have some really unique photos from this phase. The 6-month milestone is one of the most underrated but one of the cutest times to take newborn photos. They likely have teeth so you can get those cute little grins in their photos Your baby is also probably a lot more roly-poly and mobile. They are interacting a lot more with you and can focus their eyes on what is going on around. You can also book an outdoor session at this time. If you miss the 2-week photos, the 6-month milestone is the perfect time to book an in-home newborn photo session.
