what makes for great photos at home?
Photographing a newborn baby in a family home comes down to the perfect light. As a photographer, working with families with young kids, I always say there is no place like the comfort of home to remember this special time of your lives. This young family recently added a new precious member to their home and hearts and wanted to document their early days as a family of 4. I had done their maternity photos late last year so I was well-acquainted with their dynamic. It was clear to me that photography was an important part of their story (even without me) so I was very encouraged to be as creative as possible with my camera. The natural light in their home played a very important part in this story.
always make sure there is a window
The main rooms you will be photographing your subjects in will need to have access to natural daylight coming from a window. I always recommend that the window area should be cleared of any large objects that would obstruct the light. If the room does not have a window then just skip that room altogether. If the family insists on using that room, I would recommend an off-camera flash setup or artificial lights.
what If the natural light is too harsh?
For this newborn session, there was bright sunlight coming into the windows. One thing you can do should this happen is lower the blinds. You can also soften some of the light with this reflector/diffuser kit. Use the part that is translucent and place it in front of the window to soften the light. You can also move your families to parts of the room that are exposed to less of the direct light and have more shade. Play with lights and shadows + the settings on your camera to get images that your love.
