top 5 things to do with kids in everett/mukiteo/Whidbey island

I love living in Everett Washington. It has a reputation I do not subscribe to at all. I love the hardworking people and families that live here. We are a creative, resourceful bunch and I sing the praises of this city no matter where I go. It's been my first home since I moved to the US and I have a soft spot for the life that happens here.

If you've been lucky enough to live and/or raise a family in Everett, Mukilteo, Mill Creek or any of the neighboring cities or towns, I created a list of things to do when you are visiting. I hope to create a series of these posts because I cannot stick to just 5 things. Here are some fun things you can do with your kids or family in and around Everett.

go on a family hike

Everett is a great mid-way location to some picturesque and accessible locations for family hikes. It has so many spots for you to take your kids to explore and run around, no matter their ages. If you live in Everett, you're close to the great Mountain Loop Highway, the Mukilteo ferry terminal to Whidbey Island (that connects you to Anacortes and the San Juan Islands), city parks like Discovery Park in Seattle, the Centennial Trail in Snohomish and more. Check out a list of easy day hikes in Everett for your family.

soak in the museums

Being in the Pacific Northwest means we are sometimes at the whims of the weather which makes a museum trip very practical. The Imagine Children's museum has some amazing indoor and outdoor exhibits for kids. The Flying Heritage Combat and Armor Museum in Everett is a great stop for the airplane nerds in your family. One of my favorite museums is the Snackin Shack, which boasts a wide collection of snacks and is run in a garage space in Everett. Find out more about this quirky collection here.

Watch a movie outdoors

A quick ferry ride across to Whidbey Island will take you the the Blue Fox Drive-In Theater, which shows movie starting at dusk. You can't bring any outside food or drinks but food is available for purchase on the grounds. If your family has a camper van, the Theater grounds have accommodations for camping too. You could stay the night here before heading back to Everett.

Take a ferry to JEtty island

The Jetty island passenger ferry starts running on the 4th of July weekend and continues until Labor Day weekend. It's a 2-mile long beach stretch which has plenty of space to set up a beach umbrella and spend the day here. The best time to visit is during low tide, when the water tends to be a little warmer. You'll spot a lot of kite boarding enthusiasts but I bet the best thing you can do when you're visiting Everett's Jetty Island is to slather on sunscreen, lay down and soak up the sun. If you have access to your own boat, you can visit the island at any time during the year.

Stay home

Really there is no better activity to do in Everett than to hang out at home and spend time with your people (mostly) distraction-free. I love finding new activities to do in and around the house or in my neighborhood. I go on long walks, play in my garden and get so much joy from cooking long slow meals. Invite your family and friends home, throw a potluck and make a day out of it.
